Wanted Dead AND Alive Exhibition
Sheyla, a 20 year old female visual artist born and raised in Cuba, is a star on the rise.
She exhibited artistic talent at a very young age. When she was barely 2 years old, she began honing her craft spending most of her time dedicating herself to artistic expression. Fast forward to early 2016, without formal artistic schooling, she participated in a workshop at the "Iglesia del Carmen" in Old Havana. Her work was so impactful and well received that she was given her first exhibition “Masks” at that location later that year. In 2017, she entered the XLIII edition of the Martí Studies Youth Seminar art contest where she won first prize. Later, in 2018, she applied to and was accepted into the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba. In 2019, she represented San Alejandro in the 13th Havana Biennial showing some of her sculptures, and receiving grand honors. |
In 2020, still a student, a she won an art painting contest held at the Hotel Nacional, in Havana.
Despite confinement for almost three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the elimination of all social and cultural activities, events and exhibitions in Cuba, she kept working on the development of new projects that would contribute to her personal and artistic development.
Her strength and resilience shone through during the lockdown, as she continued to work and was a major contributor to the 14th Havana Biennial in 2021. Her work on the “Bi-Ennnial Project 90 60 90", received critical acclaim. Her next exhibition "Subconscious", in which she delved into the very close dialogue between the spectator and artist served as a formula for her physical renewal and spiritual therapy coming out of the pandemic.
In 2022, she graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Visual Arts, and was discovered by Frank Mesa, a Gallerist, in New York, USA.
In June 2023, her works went on display as part of the “Seres Imperfectos” exhibit by ChangoLife Arts, in the KuBe Art Center in Beacon, New York.
In September 2023, her works were on display at the Cuban Fine Arts gallery “Women at Work” show in Greenwich Village, NYC, and her first solo exhibition in the ChangoLife Arts gallery opens on January 20 through March 31, 2024.
