“In February 2013, I spent 2 weeks scouring the streets of Havana Cuba documenting contemporary murals, street art and graffiti. Most communist countries are very strict about their outward appearance of their urban landscape and forbid any kind of individualistic visual expression in public places, but in Cuba, the case was just the opposite. I did not see any restriction of visual public expression. The walls looked very hip, western and contemporary. Unfortunately, their beautiful classic Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Art Deco architecture was is deplorable dilapidated condition. The bold, vividly colorful wall paintings created a disconcerting contrast when seen on the crumbling buildings. My talk will elaborate this contrast of structural antiquity and the varied contemporary artistic street works.”
